Travel guide to Tallinn
1 city, 4 areas, 21 cool things to do and see
1. Rotermanni
"An urban space of unique architecture and vibrant rhythms".
Rotermann City (anno 1829) is the area raging with modern architecture, cafés, office spaces and design spots.
1. Start your day at RØST Leib & Kohv with a cinnamon bun and a cup of excellent coffee.
2. Marvel at the old industrial buildings and the new modern architecture by walking the streets of Roseni, Rotermanni and Ahtri.
3. Visit the museum of Estonian Architecture.
4. Indulge yourself with traditional Kalev delights.
5. Shop in/look around the Tallinn Design House.
2. Kadriorg
Poetic, quiet, secluded, majestic.
Kadriorg is all about the castles, museums and parks.
1. Visit Kadriorg palace - for the splendour of the Tsar Peter the Great times and the Art Museum, housed in it (enjoy the Western and Russian art collections).
2. Go inside the house museum of the Peter the Great.
3. KUMU museum - largest exhibition space in Estonia. Marvelous building and impressive permanent collection. Make sure to check out temporary exhibitions as well.
4. The park, of course. The Kadriorg park is filled with fountains and flowers, but the true gem is the Japanese Garden (by the Kyoto designer). Meditate, contemplate, unwind.
3. Old Town
A piece of history.
Winding streets, cobblestone pavements, dim street lights, gothic spires and medieval markets of
the Old Town.
1. Bird's-eye view at the top of the Oleviste Church.
2. Feel the hustle and bustle with a touch of history at the Raekoja Platz and visit one of the oldest continuously running pharmacies in Europe - Raeapteek.
3. Have dinner in one of the multiple little cosy traditional places. My personal favorite is Trofé Restaurant (other recommendations are: Rataskaevu 16, Von Krahli Aed and Kompressor).
4. Go inside the St. Nicholas Church to see it in its medieval grandeur.
5. Get lost on the old streets of the area and just maybe come across the remains of the town wall. (Väike-Kloostri 1)
4. Kalamaja
Kalamaja - "Creative pulse. Industrial bones."
Former fishing village - creative and bohemian.
1. Telliskivi Creative City - bohemian place in the ex-factory area. Whether you are a restaurant-goer, art and design lover or looking to shop for a unique treasure, this is a place for you ! (make sure to check out their event calendar before your visit https://telliskivi.cc/en/events/)
2.Take a stroll at the port Noblessner. Loft-style offices, cool reinvented industrial architecture, yachts and seasonal outdoor cafes.
3. Attend an event at Kultuurikatel - "one of the most unique creative event spaces in Northern Europe". It is a source of inspiration for everyone - from Tarkovski to Angela Merkel. Maybe it will inspire you too?
4. Visit one of the countless cool cafés and bars (my pick - Klaus Kohvik (for when it opens again), Korsten Kitchen or Põhjala Brewery & Tap Room).
5. See the "hipsterville" with various street food stalls and shops in shipping containers - Depoo. Built as a tribute to the Soviet era (visit the Sveta Baar for the fuller experience).
6. Patarei Sea Fortress - for those who love abandoned building. Not only is it European architectural heritage, but also a hunting old prison.
7. Balti Jaama Turg - diverse food hall and beautifully planned food market (by KOKO architects) with great food and design.
